AAMLO Murals - A Journey of Promise

The mural depicts historic figures and scenes representing significant individuals and events of African American history of Northern California. Abduljaamila Painted Carvings  
Multiple chainsaw wood log carvings, many like totem poles and larger than life characters. From SOS: "Series of sculptures at a private residence include a standing giraffe, a female gorilla, a pair of male figures holding aloft a sphere and a group of monkeys climbing a tree. The giraffe is clad in copper and its head is turned to the proper right. The female gorilla stands with her hands resting on her proper right thigh as she looks over her proper left shoulder. The two male figures in ""Holding up the World"" are African-American. The kneeling figure in front wears a pink tank top and trousers and the standing figure at the back wears a white shirt and red trousers. The group of monkeys climbs a tree toward a bunch of bananas. There are three monkeys and from top to bottom they are white, black and brown."

Adams Point

No documentation has been found that explains why the sculpture was removed from the site or where it exists now.

From SOS: description "Two pair of granite figures on a building. The first pair flank a clock which rests on the corner of the building. The pair are half-length nude figures; the one on the proper left is female, the one on the proper right is male. Each has an arm resting on the ornamentation surrounding the clock. The male holds a knot of heavy rope in his proper right arm. The bottom of each figure merges into foliage ornamentation which surrounds the clock. The second pair of figures stand atop the corner of the building and flank a flagpole. The pair are classically-styled full-length figures and stand on either side of an over-sized shield; each rests an arm on the shield."

"The pole was carved to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the California College of Arts and Crafts. The project was coordinated by Georganna Pearce Malloff, in collaboration with CCAC students. (On back of piece:) Education with Imagination 1983 unsigned"  

Crack Slavery  
From an article in the Oakland Tribune dated April 19, 1989 entitled, "Fighting Crack Slavery". Story about how two annonymous artists painted a guerilla mural on the side of a known drug hangout successfully shaming the dealers into going elsewhere. The neighborhood response was quoted as being very positive. Store owner kept the "graffiti" mural for a couple years I think.

FDR Pier Mural  
Temporary barrier mural surrounding the FDR Pier, which appears to be under construction for an indeterminate amount of time. Painted by kids from Project Yield (Cole School) under the supervision of MOCHA artist Lisa Ostapinski. The mural was part of a larger program of the Port of Oakland that included education about the bay environment. Pictures of wildfowl and the water -- sort of what the estuary may have once looked like -- were inspired by the classes.

"Original cast found in Blair Estate, Piedmont (California). It was given to Trafford Charleton, who later gave it to the Port of Oakland. It was repaired and cast into bronze by Lee McCarty."  

Jack London Mural  
A mural on Heinolds First & Last Chance Saloon depicting Jack London and some of his more popular stories. By artist T. Scott Sayre (see link to Tribune article)  
Jesus and the Apostles  
Sited at the First Congregational Church. From SOS: "The church, inspired by Italian Romanesque cathedrals, was built by John Galen Howard and was dedicated Nov. 2, 1925. A bas-relief of Jesus and the twelve disciples. The figure of Jesus is centered and stands on a raised step. His proper left hand rests on the head of the disciple next to him, and his proper right hand is at his side. Eleven of the disciples have their hands clasped in an attitude of prayer, while the twelfth, who is at the immediate proper right of Jesus, has his arms folded. All figures wear robes and have halos. The bas-relief is above the central entrance to the church, and supports a colonnade in the pediment."  
Joaquin Miller - Poet of the Sierras, 1841-1913  
From SOS: "A statue of Joaquin Miller as a bearded man astride a standing horse. The equestrian statue sits atop a rectangular base. The statue is after a miniature by the sitter's daughter, Juanita Miller. Restoration work was performed in 1968, including coating the statue with pigment and iron filings to produce a patina on its surface. In Merville A. Reed's Book titled "Historical Statues and Monuments in California", Miller wears a hat which is now missing."  
John B. Williams Bust

Latham - Ducel Fountain  
Large working fountain topped with standing figure. From SOS: "Cast-iron fountain set in a stone basin. The fountain is topped by a full-length statue of the moon goddess, Diana. She wears a long robe and holds a torch aloft in her proper right arm. Below are four lions' heads from which water flows into two levels of cast-iron basins.

"The fountain was purchased by the Latham family in Paris in the 1870's and brought to Oakland. It was located at the Latham mansion until 1957 when the mansion was demolished. After being removed from the grounds of Latham Mansion, the fountain served as a centerpiece for a flower show. In 1957 it was moved to Knowland Park. It was later moved to downtown Oakland where it served as a memorial to Daniel P. Collins, executive secretary to Mayor Houlihan. In the 1980's it was moved to its current location in Preservation Park.

Latham Fountain  
Bronze angels hold a large cup with grape and leaves as decorative touches. The figures are mounted on the top of a stone pillar with fountain and text below.

From SOS: "Fountain consists of four scalloped basins with bronze ornamentation in between, a four-sided tapered pedestal with animal head spouts and a figurative grouping at the top. The decorative elements between the basins include dolphins and plants. The three cherub-like figures on top carry a bowl over their heads. There is a medallion on the south side which features an angel restraining a man from beating a donkey.

Lifesize animals silouttes cut out steel sheets and installed in the median strip at the intersection.  
Mother Peace  
Mother Peace is a 30 ton sculpture constructed from steel girders and designed to be kinetically activated.

The sculpture was installed in front of the Alameda County Courthouse in Oakland for the 1974 Public Sculptures: Urban Spaces exhibition. Upon seeing it, County Supreme Court Judge Lewis E. Lercara declared the work an abomination and said, "Just because someone gets a grant doesn't mean they have to deface the city." The Judge collected signatures demanding the immediate removal of Mother Peace and brought the matter to the Oakland City Council. The public packed City Hall to speak out on the issue, with many Bay Area artists defending the work.

After much discussion, the Council voted to dismantle the sculpture at the end of the exhibition. Mother Peace went on to a Whitney Museum exhibit where it was displayed in Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn and was well received. The sculpture now resides at the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY alongside other notable di Suvero works. See http://www.stormking.org/MarkdiSuvero.html.

Solstice was one of six large scale pieces made by the artist in 1983 from salvaged redwood. It was acquired in 1986 by Bramalea Pacific and was later copper clad and installed in Oakland City Center. IAS files contain an information sheet on the sculpture from Barclay Simpson Fine Arts Gallery. The artist describes his work as a cross between Stonehenge and Shinto shrines."

Whatever Works  
Formerly on the side of the Campanille Veterinary Clinic. Could really use a color photo here. Created late 1980's? destroyed around 1999-2000? Anyone know Ray?  
Wishing Poles and Other Incarnations  
A series of mobile pieces hanging from ceiling in Gallery 555 can be seen from the street. Artist's statement describes the symbolics nature of objects strung together and the power that emerges from such a collection. Plexiglass pieces are sanded to translucence and move gently as air circulates in space. See http://www.museumca.org/satelite/welz.html for more about the exhibit.  
Woodminster Ampitheatre & Cascades  
(from Parks website) "Woodminister, literally translated as cathedral in the woods, was built under the auspices of the Oakland Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and the Work Project Administration (WPA) as a monument to California poets and writers."  
World Wall for Peace  
A long tile wall outside Barnes & Noble conveys the message of world peace to all...with the help of dozens of school children.  
Your Memory Column  
A zigzag monolith with colorful liquid glazes stands in front of the Federal Building.

From SOS: "Abstract tower composed of a series of triangular shapes abutting one another. The surface is composed of colored tiles bearing abstract patterns, numerology and Cabalistic imagery, and finished with a highly reflective glaze. The tower rises from a blue and white base bordered with polished granite.

"Commissioned by Art-in-Architecture program for the Federal Building's plaza. DiStefano and his partner Diane Troy made every part by hand, mixing and casting the concrete form, and painting hundreds of tiles individually."
