***UPDATE***

The mapping portion of this site is being converted to use Google Maps. This activity will interrupt availability of the preexisting maps. Thank you for your patience, and be sure to check back soon to see the new maps.

By using interactive mapping, we get the big picture of public art distribution of Oakland. Currently we only have the basic city map below, and the individual maps generated to map each individual work of art. This map displays the locations of all works of art for which we have coordinates:

***NOTE*** This map uses images in the portable network graphics (PNG) format, which require newer versions of Internet browsers. (Why PNG? A long technical description that includes more information on the Unisys and CompuServe GIF royalties issue is available here.)

The interactive maps displayed on Oakland ArtTrust were created using UMN/TerraSIP MapServer 4.0.1, a development environment for building spatially enabled applications. Layers for Alameda County are derived from U.S. Census TIGER. Other data collected from manual GPS readings and other input are stored in a PostgreSQL database that has been spatially enabled with PostGIS. These and other components of the Oakland ArtTrust website are open source and/or free software.
